During 2019, the International Center for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar applied for a call for project proposals "Restoration of the Cultural Heritage of the Urban Area of Zadar“.

The purpose of the project is the renovation and valorization of the complex of the former church and monastery of St. Nicholas in Zadar with the aim of increasing the number of new employees in the tourism sector and increasing the expected number of visitors to the cultural heritage. The project will ensure the renovation of existing and construction of new premises of the International Center for Underwater Archeology in Zadar, equipping and adapting them to new facilities with the primary purpose of improving the cultural, educational and scientific segment and implementing other necessary activities.

Approved funds allocated through the ITU mechanism will give a new impetus to the International Center for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar. Renovation of the entire complex of the monastery and the former church of St. Nikola will mean the completion of the story we have been working on for the last ten years, and its goal is to continue educating international students, experts and the general public who will be presented the richness of underwater heritage not only in the Adriatic but also in the wider Mediterranean area. Upon completion of the reconstruction of this complex, the city of Zadar will get a unique place where visitors can learn about underwater heritage through various facilities and workshops, and young scientists will be able to gain additional knowledge about underwater archaeology and conservation of underwater archaeological finds. In addition, the renovation of the former church of St. Nikola, it will be possible to hold various cultural and scientific events such as scientific conferences, exhibitions, but also performances and concerts for which this facility has already served to a lesser extent. "

Preparation of the project for the renovation of the complex of the former church and monastery of St. Nicholas in Zadar has been running since 2014, since when the Ministry of Culture, UNESCO and the City of Zadar have invested almost 2.5 million HRK (approx. 330.000 EUR) in the preparation of project documentation and archaeological research within this complex. The complete project documentation was prepared in the design office of Forvm d.o.o. by architect Ante Uglešić.

The partner in the project is the Tourist Board of the City of Zadar, which will actively participate in the promotion and visibility of the project.
