In Honour of the Victory at Lepanto

In Honour of the Victory at Lepanto

In the sequence of defensive gates in the Zadar fortification system, a special place belongs to the Gate of St Chrysogonus. It was opened in 1573 in honour of the victory of the Christian navy over the Turkish armada in a historic battle near Lepanto in 1571. Zadar is particularly proud of that victory, not only because after it a peace treaty was signed between the Venetian Republic and the Turkish Empire, but also because the Christian Navy gathered in front of Zadar before going into battle and that as many as seven ships from Zadar were a part of the fleet.
