Origin of the Name Petrčane
The oldest reference of Petrčane, dating from 1071, was found in the Chartularium (Register) of the Benedictine Monastery of St Mary in Zadar, and it is about the disposition of land by the famous Zadar nun Čika. The origin of the name for the Petrčane settlement is most often derived from personal names Petricus or Petar and Zane. During the Middle Ages Petrčane properties were administered by Zadar monasteries of St Grisogonus, St Mary and St Plato. In addition, many rich Zadar nobles owned properties there, among them Cosa Saladin and Admiral Jakov Šubić.
