Saving a Soul from Purgatory in St Donat's

The Church of St Donat is a Zadar symbol and myth, a monument with which the city most often identifies. It is the most monumental structure in Dalmatia from the early Middle Ages. It was erected in the main city of the province, from which the whole east coast of the Adriatic was administered. Legend says that in the 9^th century Zadar bishop Donat was responsible for its construction, and historical records show that it was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In 1495, while traveling to the Holy Land, Johann Meisenheimer visited Zadar and testified that if one with devout motives climbs the stairs of St Donat to the rotunda on the first floor, one saves a soul from Purgatory.
