35th Anniversary of the Defence of Zadar
From 27 September to 16 October, Zadar will mark the 35th anniversary of the Defence of Zadar with a series of commemorative events dedicated to Croatian Homeland War veterans and the events of autumn 1991. The programme includes cultural, sporting, educational and memorial events at several locations across the city.
The programme begins on 27 September with the “Danijel Telesmanić Did” Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Jazine Hall. From 28 September to 4 October, Providur’s Palace will host the programme “Zadar Is Not to Be Given Away – The Truth About the Defence of Zadar Through Images and Records”, featuring screenings of documentary films about the defence of the city. On 1 October, the exhibition “Unconquered Zadar – The Battle for the City 1991” will open at the National Museum Zadar.
The sporting programme includes the 8th “Along the City Defence Line” road race from Bokanjac to Dračevac on 3 October, a memorial shooting tournament and a youth football tournament featuring Zadar football schools. On the same day, a concert by the Zadar City Music ensemble and local klapa groups will take place at People’s Square.
The central commemoration will take place on 6 October, with wreath-laying and candle-lighting ceremonies at several locations, a Holy Mass and a formal academy at Dračevac. In the evening, a ceremonial concert by the parish choirs Cantores Sancti Petri and Vicko Zmajević will be held at the Church of St Peter in Ploča.
A special part of this year’s programme will be a concert of gratitude to Zadar’s Croatian Homeland War veterans, taking place on Saturday, 10 October at 8 PM at People’s Square. The concert will feature Nina Vujević, Leo Rados and the popular Croatian rock band Opća opasnost.
The October programme will also include the presentation of the monograph dedicated to the 5th Guards Brigade of the Croatian Army “Sokolovi”, the scientific symposium “Transgenerational Transmission of War Trauma”, the presentation of the book “Warriors of Light – You Are Walking History”, a public discussion on war photography and a screening of the documentary film “On the Front Line – Zadar”.
