On the occasion of the European Year of Cultural Heritage the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar will organize the international conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage of the EU and Europe under the title ´´Underwater Cultural Heritage in Europe today´´.
The event will take place in Zadar at St. Nicholas church within the International Center for Underwater Archaeology on the 25th and 26th October 2018.
On the 25th of October the event will begin with a meeting of experts from the field of underwater archaeology that will focus on exchanging experiences and presenting achievements in the protection and preservation of cultural heritage, the availability of advanced technology that enhances discovery of and access to underwater cultural heritage. The intention is to make contacts among international organizations, scientific institutions, professional organizations, archaeologists, divers, other interested parties and the public which is essential for the protection of underwater cultural heritage.
On the 26th of October the Conference will focus on the issues of the implementation of the UNESCO’s 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Heritage in the EU countries, experiences of the States that have applied and those who have not done so, as well as on the improving the effectiveness of measures at international, regional and national level for the preservation of the underwater cultural heritage. The representatives of the ministries of culture will examine the importance of the underwater cultural heritage as an integral part of the cultural heritage of humanity and a particularly important element in the history of peoples, nations, and their relations with each other concerning their common heritage. The public interest and public appreciation of underwater cultural heritage is growing.
The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology has sent a letter of invitation to experts and representatives of the UNESCO, the UNESCO Venice Office, the Council of Europe and the representatives of the ministries of culture of eleven EU countries.
There will be an organized guided tour of the famous locations and museums in the area of Zadar and its surroundings (Museum of Nin Antiquities, Homeland Museum of Biograd).
The conference will also be attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the University of Zadar, City of Zadar, Zadar County and the media.
The international conference "Underwater Cultural Heritage in Europe Today" is part of the program of the Republic of Croatia’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
