S. Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf
The Zadar Chamber Orchestra, directed by the young conductor Veton Marevci, will give a number of performances, the same day in the Croatian National Theatre, of the piece Peter and the Wolf by the Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev. It is a symphonic fairy-tale written for a narrator and orchestra, aimed for the children of nursery and early primary school age. During the concert, the children get to know the instruments of the symphony orchestra, their physical appearance and their tone, in a humorous approach of the composer, who gave each instrument a specific task. Hence, a bird is represented by the flute, a grandpa is represented by the bassoon, a cat by the clarinet, a duck by the oboe, hunters by the trumpets, the wolf by the horns, and the protagonist, a boy named Peter, is represented by the entire orchestra. The plot and the characters are also visually shown in pictures on the big screen, which show how Peter overcame the terrifying wolf with the help of hunters and friends from the animal kingdom. Since its premiere in 1936, this piece has also been adapted to other media, including an Academy Award-winning short film.
