The Most Beautiful City Gate in Dalmatia

Erected in 1543, the Land Gate is an ambitious work by the head engineer of the Republic of Venice, Michele Sanmicheli. It was immediately appraised as luxurious, and later as the most valuable monument that Venice left in Dalmatia. Moreover, with the Golden Gate of the Diocletian’s Palace in Split, it is certainly the most beautiful city gate in general on the historic Dalmatian ground, a masterpiece of its author. It appeared much more impressive when it was reached by a drawbridge.
