When the celestial Emperor August (Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus), around 27 BC, promoted Zadar to the Adriatic colony of Roman citizens, the Emperor's subjects drew up at least five lines lengthwise and eight across the peninsula, and there where the two main streets met across and along, the location of the Forum was determined. This basic urban structure of proper rectangular shape has still not been changed. The main roman cross street (Decumanus) is now Široka Street (Kalelarga), and transversal (Cardo) Šimun Kožičić Benja Street.
