History in the Coffee Cup - Stories from the First Zadar Coffee Houses
On Thursday, May 7, 2026, starting at 12 o'clock in the atrium of the Proveditor's Palace, Marin Banović, mag. ed. hist. and expert associate at the Department of History will hold a public lecture "History in the Coffee Bush: Stories from the First Zadar Coffee Shops".
Zadar, a historic center of the eastern Adriatic defined by the vibrant circulation of people and ideas, was a pioneer in adopting Mediterranean cultural trends, most notably coffee. This lecture unveils recent archival research regarding the emergence of coffee culture in both domestic and civic spaces. It will specifically examine Zadar’s first cafes—analyzing their ownership, patrons, and their role as vital new fixtures in the city's social fabric.
Through the lens of Zadar’s cultural history, the presentation seeks to inspire modern catering and branding efforts by drawing on the city’s rich heritage.
The event is held in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Zadar Department of History and as part of the national "Kliofest" history festival, sponsored by the City of Zadar.
