The original Davis Cup trophy is being exhibited in the Tourist Information Centre in Zadar.
The official name of the trophy is the International Lawn Tennis Challenge Trophy. It was donated in 1900 by American Dwight F. Davis for a competition between teams from the United States and Great Britain. Davis himself played on winning U.S. teams in the first two meetings (1900 and 1902).
Our guests will thus have an opportunity to see this valuable trophy won by the Croatian national team last year in November with a victory over France by 3-1.
On the way to this great triumph, city of Zadar also had a significant role, where the Croatian team won the United States team in the semifinals in Višnjik Sports Centre.
"From Zadar we went to the final in Lille, where we won this trophy with victory over France. Once again, thanks to Višnjik and all the supporters, who made a great contribution in victory. I am glad we are back in Zadar today with this trophy, because being a World Champion is certainly a huge success. Here in Zadar after the Davis Cup semifinals a new real regional tennis center is being constructed, where kids can play on seven courts, with the plan to build three more concrete additional ones.", said Ms. Nikolina Babić, president of the Croatian Tennis Association.
The Croatian national team won the cup twice. The first time in 2005 with the victory over Slovakia in Bratislava. Last year Croatia won the last edition of Davis Cup in the former format played continuously for 118 years. The new format is called the World Tennis Cup and consists of 16 best teams, who will all compete in a single one-week final tournament.
