A Combination of Adrenaline and History in a new Tourist Route in Zadar
Tourist agency from Zadar "Feral Tours" has joined the Interreg EU project called "Revival - Revitalization and reuse of lost heritage" along with three partner cities from Croatia (Rijeka, Zadar and Split) and four from Italy (Forli, Campobasso, Cesenatico and Pesaro).
After the arrangement and revitalization of the UNESCO protected City Walls, which are a significant fortification system in the very center of the old town of Zadar, the works will soon begin on the reconstruction of military fortifications - a bunker on Vidikovac. The selected bunker and the associated landscape, which will be the first to be rearranged as part of the Revival project, will become a multifunctional, presentation exhibition space for smaller events with an interactive video wall where those interested will get all information about the bunker system throughout the city. .
The project seeks to make available to the local population and tourists, in a safe way, currently neglected buildings and bunkers that represent an important form of cultural heritage with significant economic and cultural potential and promote them as a common tourist route.
The shortened route, lasting one hour, was driven from the bunker on Vidikovac, through the suburb areas of Musapstan, Crni, Križ and Dračevac, and ended where it started, on Vidikovac. Off road ride from bunker to bunker, with everything it brings (water, forest, macadam) along with interesting facts from the history of this area gives participants the opportunity to explore the surroundings, feel nature and experience adventure.
There are over 250 bunkers in Zadar and they represent a large part of the city's history, and at the same time they form an addition to the fortifications that date back to ancient times, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the first half of the 20th century. These bunkers are important because of their great role in the defense of Zadar during the Homeland War in '91, while in the future they are importante because of their diversity through the design of content for the local population and the development of a new tourist offer. The aim of the project is to improve the system of protection and management of cultural and natural heritage in a sustainable way.
The REVIVAL project (Interreg Croatia - Italy) includes the University of Zadar, the Croatian cities of Zadar, Rijeka and Split and the Italian cities of Forli, Campobasso, Cesenatico and Pesaro, which represent outstanding examples of industrial archeology, rationalist and modernist architecture. Built through the 20th century, selected buildings and bunkers will be revived through the project and fit into the international cultural route under the slogan "Let's revive them again".
