Gastro Advent: This Year's Main Specialties, Part 3
After several days of this year’s Advent in Zadar, it can already be seen that the offer of food and drinks in the Advent little houses has never been so rich and diverse. Actually, some gastronomy standards of the Advent Fair such as boiled or fried sausages and burgers are still most represented which is to be understood – they are globally food in the category of fast and street food always sought for by the public.
However, a good number of hospitality workers participating in the fair has expanded its offer with other interesting dishes from the colorful array of food consumed on the street, as well as other traditional and less well-known dishes, even those needing long cooking and comfort food eaten with a spoon. Besides that, this year the offer of fish dishes is definitely different and better than in previous years, and vegans can also be provided for many have at least one vegan dish in their offer. All aspire in offering something different from others and to be recognizable in their offer.
We visited the Advent houses and tried to find out what good things were being cooked, baked and served.
Forty Five
Brother and sister, Marta and Marino Vučkov, who run a successful burger bar in Pakoštane with the wholehearted assistance of their parents introduced themselves to the Advent with their imaginative specialties: superb Steak burger, chicken and vegan burgers, Cuba sandwiches and excellent sausages that come from Vinkovci. They get the meat for their sandwiches from the well-known Lepur family of butchers, while their bread comes from the Pakoštane bakery Kroštula. They have thus acquired a very high level of fast food production. Occasionally, on weekends, they can offer guests some old, long-cooked dishes, such as octopus brodetto.
Fusherica
This house is run by the known Gugi Egić from Zadar, head of Harbor Restaurant in Zadar. He engaged chef Andrej Azuc who prepares juicy burgers enriched with coleslaw cabbage salad for his guests. Besides lamb meat, he also puts lightly fried chicken in his burgers, while many types of excellent Dalmatian divenica sausage from the well-known Butic Family Farm are cooked in a small cauldron. Excellent mulled wine from the cellar of the Šoškić family from Plješivica is and ace in the Fusherica offer, along with delicious cinnamon rolls, a real Christmas dessert.
Lavova kućica, Kod rođe
The Surać family from Murvica is a regular at the Adevnt in Zadar with its two houses. The best offer of these houses is sausages: homemade divenica sausage, Kranj sausage, spicy, white, Slavonian, Debrecin, Panonian suasages … and even more could probably be found. This means that, lovers of a good sausage, you know where to find one. These houses will also offer you good hamburgers and homemade fritters.
Letters to Santa
Drago Štulić from Nin offers two types of sausages, and OMG Tortilla is also stuffed with sausage and coleslaw salad that gives it juiciness. However, the best offer of the house is beverages, first of all grappa made by Štulić himself in his family farm. There are several types of grappa: lemon, jujubes, figs, carob and rose hips. Everyone can thus choose one’s favorite.
Lord's House
This house, together with the neighboring Petrunjela on the western side of the Square of the Five Wells, imposes itself with the well set price-quality ratio, and the atmosphere of a neighborhood cafe for the "home team". Lord's House is run by Đani Milin from Briševo, whose offer is also the richest burger of the entire fair. Double Lord's Burger costs only 47 kuna and is the most favorable morsel taking into consideration price, quality and quantity. Neither is Milin’s pulled pork in a sandwich expensive for it is only 42 kuna. Juicy chicken with cheese is also an excellent choice as well as the great cake with three types of chocolate which is one of the rare “serious” sweets of the entire Advent Fair.
Petrunjela
Luka Žilić and Matej Segarić, with the involvement of Nikola Jadrijev, have simplified their offer to burgers with aged baby beef and sausages from the Butić Family Farm. These juicy dishes place them at a high level of offer at the Zadar Advent Fair. They also compete with prices - not a single dish from their menu is more expensive than 40 kn. Their burgers are made with cheddar cheese, grains of sweet corn, crunchy fried onions in a sandwich with sour kraut.
Plan B
This team has been present at the Zadar Advent Fair for years, always at the same location, and Plan B is the only house that offers exclusively homemade sweet delicacies. Fritters and pancakes, arancini and limoncini, fried hazelnuts and candied almonds, caramelized apples and colorful lollipops – an offer that brings joy to the little ones, and, of course, to some adults evoked by childhood memories through these flavors.
Winter Paradise by Gušti
Zadar Pizzeria Gušti is well-known for its great Dalmatian pizza, but this team, led by Toni Zurak, decided to present a different offer at the Advent Fair – a combination of good fast food (breaded chicken rolled in dough) and Dalmatian gastro classics such as pašticada with gnocchi. Steam comes out of a cauldron full of homemade sausages in the house and Winter Paradise is the only one offering a rich cold tray packaged in a practical and excellently designed box. “A small morsel for a big event” is a combination of several types of top-quality cheese, prosciutto, fruit and grissini. Practical and tasty for the cold winter evenings along with mulled wine or gin.
