Telling Time in Zadar Is Easy
People have been telling time in Zadar for ages. The clock at People's Square has been in function since 1803! The City Sentinel, to which the clock is attached, was erected in 1562. It is believed that it was built by Giangirolamo Sanmicheli, the nephew of Michele Sanmicheli. A new, larger tower was erected in 1798, and an iron construction for the bells was placed at the top. The larger bell, which ticks away the hours was transferred from the Captain's Tower, and the smaller one, which ticks away quarter hours, from the neighbouring church of St Lawrence. The clock was assembled and mounted by the city clock maker, Martini.
