UNWTO proposed the Croatian co-organization of the 2nd Sports Congress Tourism that is held every two years. The 1st World Sports Tourism Congress was held on November 25 and 26, 2021 in Lloret de Mar, Spain.
Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing special sector of tourism. More and more tourists are interested in sports activities during their trip, regardless of whether sport is the main goal of the trip. Furthermore, the Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy until 2030 emphasizes sports tourism as one of the most important potentials for the development of year-round and territorially balanced tourism, in particular due to favorable climatic prerequisites. Sports events can be the tourist development catalyst if used successfully in terms of destination branding, infrastructure development as well as that of other economic and social benefits.

The event is to take place on April 26 and 27, 2023 in Zadar which has been chosen for its rich sports tradition and tourist offer. This congress will gather over 300 participants not only from the field of tourism but also that of sports where, besides the UNWTO general secretary, numerous ministers/deputy tourism ministers usually participate as well as those from sports countries members of the World Tourist Organization and numerous distinguished persons from the world of sport.
