Prisoner of the Captain's Tower
The Captain's Tower used to be called La Torre del Buovo d'Antona from the 17th to the middle of the 20th century.
The name was taken from a French Medieval epic that was extremely popular in Venice under the name I Reali di Francia. The story goes that the prince Buovo d'Antona (Beuve d'Antoine) was held captive in the city “Sinella di Schiavonia“, with which Zadar was easily identified, when the ground floor of the Captain's Tower was transformed into a prison in 1684. It is a pity that later the old name was given back. The Baroque opera Buovo d'Antona, according to the libretto by Carlo Goldoni from 1757, still holds the memory of the fate of the unfortunate prince in Europe, which could have stayed in connection with Zadar.
