Zadar City Walls - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Since 2017, by the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the famous Zadar city walls that the people of Zadar call Muraj, have been included in the World Heritage Site list. The walls were renewed and revitalised in 2020 with the support of the EU funds. The walls were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, and reinforced in the 16th century for the purpose of the Venetian defence against Turkish conquerors. The city walls got their official name "Walls of Zadar Uprisings" after the eleven uprisings of Zadar citizens against the Venetian Republic authorities.
The Medieval Land Gate was built in 1543 and it still sends out the same mystique and awe. It was erected high above the sea level with the carved figure of St Chrysogonus on horseback and St Mark's winged lion, the coat of arms of the Republic of Venice, so with time, this gate has become one of the most beautiful monuments and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.
Between the ferry port and the city market there is the Sea Gate, also known as the Gate of St Chrysogonus, because of a little church nearby dedicated to this patron of Zadar, which was built in 1573 in honour of the victory of the Christian army over the army of the Ottoman Empire in Lepanto. The Gate is shaped by built-in components of a Roman triumphal arch that Melia Aniana, a former Roman citizen from Zadar, erected in the memory of her husband.
Within close proximity to the city bridge on the northern side, one can find the Neo-Renaissance New Gate, which was built at the time of the Italian occupation of Zadar. The New Gate leads to the People's Square and Kalelarga, so they represent the new and most important entrance to the city centre. The Gate of St Roch leads to the city market, in whose proximity the Gate of Saint Mary was located in the Middle Ages.
