Notification to Tourists in Zadar
Swimsuits are an essential garment during the summer season on beaches all around the world. Unfortunately, these pieces of fabric, designed for swimming in the sea, are often worn in tourist areas where it is completely inappropriate: in city centers, shops, cultural institutions...
This year, tourists are also being given promotional leaflets printed in Croatian and four other languages, drawing attention to the inappropriateness of wearing swimsuits outside of designated areas.
“We kindly ask you to show your respect for the local customs and cultural tradition by wearing appropriate attire when you are in the city. Swimsuits are to be worn on the beach and not while in the historic center of the city. Thank you for your understanding and have a nice holiday in Zadar!”
Swimsuits are suitable for beaches, pools, and other water-related destinations, but wearing them in the city center is certainly not in line with social norms.

Wearing inappropriate clothing is not just a matter of aesthetics but also of decency and responsible behavior towards the hosts and other tourists. It should, to some extent, reflect respect for the environment in which one is located. When tourists enter the city center, they are entering a special place with a rich history and heritage, recognized by UNESCO. We expect visitors to explore the city dressed in leisurewear, not in beachwear.
By behaving responsibly, tourists create a positive impression of themselves, showing that they respect social norms and contribute to a pleasant atmosphere for everyone in the city.
The act of walking through the historical core of our city without proper clothing or with part of the beachwear is not regulated by a specific ordinance. The Zadar Tourist Board hopes that the appeal to tourists will have a positive effect and that such incidents will be exceptions rather than the norm.
