Evidence of Splendour and Power of Medieval Zadar
From 1273, Zadar has been enjoying the heavenly protection of Saint Simeon. His silver casket, a glamorous piece of Middle Age metalwork, and one of the most interesting goldsmith achievements in Europe in the 14th century, is evidence of splendour, power and civilisational reach of Zadar in the Gothic period. It was ordered and made in Zadar as an oath gift to Queen Elizabeth Kotromanić, wife of Louis the Great, King of Hungary and Croatia. The contract made on 5th July 1377 between the Queen's representatives and the goldsmith Francis from Milan, who handled approximately 343 kilos of silver and gilded sheet metal, has been kept to this day.
