Zadar Maraschino in Balzac's Novel

Zadar brandy Maraschino enjoyed such world fame in the 19th century, that even the immortal Honoré de Balzac wrote of it. In 1837 he resided in Milan and Venice. While in Milan, he visited the literary saloon of the popular countess Clara Maffei, friend of Cavour, Mazzini, and Verdi. There he learned a lot about Zadar and Dalmatia, what he later evoked literary in a love adventure of the protagonist of the novel A Start in Life (Un début dans la vie).
