Ist

The village of the same name on the island has two grocery stores, coffee bars, a pizzeria, and three restaurants. Ist was first mentioned in the early 14th century, and since the 1920s it had the largest merchant navy in Dalmatia. Ist is also known for its basketball tournament and swimming marathon, and the island is the birthplace of Dina Levačić, the first Croatian woman to swim across the English Channel.

The waters surrounding the island of Ist are rich in fish, attracting sports fishermen, while the underwater world is equally fascinating, as divers well know. Organized anchorages for boats are available in the village and in Mljake Cove, and accommodation is offered in private houses and apartments. This small, peaceful island, sharing its name with the central settlement located in a bay with a small marina, is a perfect destination for lovers of quiet, nature-focused, and secluded holidays.

With barely 250 inhabitants, a hilly interior, vineyards, olive groves, neighboring islands of Molat and Škarda, sandy beaches, coves, and shoals, it offers excellent opportunities for sports fishing, diving, and nautical tourism. Anchorages for boats are organized in the village and Mljake Cove, with accommodation available in private holiday homes.

The island of Ist was first mentioned under the Illyrian name Gistum. It was mentioned as Ost for the first time in 1311, and as Isto in 1527. It is also recorded under the names Gist, Esto, and Jist. The arriving Croatian population encountered native Romance inhabitants on the island, adopting today's place names from them: Funestrala, Klunda, Mavrela, Skrivadica, Turtula, Pendulj, etc.
