The Gothic Church of St Dominic in Zadar is located on the west side of the Land Gate, right across the Nassis Palace and the complex of the Proveditor's Palace. In 1396 the first Croatian university started operating as part of the Dominican Monastery.
The general Philosophical-Theological Faculty of the Dominican order in Zadar was founded by the superior master of the Dominican order, and it was in function until the beginning of the 19th century, when it was abolished by the French government. The Monastery was founded in 1228, three years after the arrival of the Dominicans in Dalmatia. In the 16th century, the Monastery of St Dominic opened a school, where the clergy and laymen were taught the so-called free arts.
