Stream Zadar 2026

Stream Zadar, organized by the Zadar Dance Ensemble, is a platform of educational content that deals with contemporary dance and theater, as well as upgrading the skills and virtuosity of numerous performing disciplines. The entire project was created fifteen years ago and was designed as a cycle of workshops with specific content that complement the practice of contemporary dance, but also of generally conscious engagement with the body.

The systematic approach of these workshops is based on somatic practices, the development of choreographic skills and research processes, but also workshops for professionals and the general public dedicated to reporting and monitoring contemporary dance and theater. With its tradition and pedagogical practice in the field of contemporary dance, Zadar has established itself as an ideal location for the implementation of the Stream Zadar platform program, which, through the implementation of its program, unites the educational and performance cycle of the "Zadar Dance Summer". Three workshops are taking place in the Zadar Dance Ensemble and Youth Center from August 16 to 22, coinciding with the Monoplay Festival of Contemporary Dance, dedicated to solo form, which begins on August 19 and lasts four days. The workshop leaders are eminent European dance artists and pedagogues. So far, a considerable number of lecturers have been invited in the past fifteen years: Julyen Hamilton, Nina Fajdiga, Hanna Hegenscheidt, David Hernandez, Matej Kejžar, Grgur Kovačić, Nenad Vertovšek, Libby Farr, Maša Kagao Knez, Aleksandar Acev, Simon Mayer, Andrej Zupančić, Marin Lemić, Francesco Scavetta, Saša Božić and many others. The constant change and development of dance art make us aware of the need for informal education of dancers, choreographers and pedagogues. The fifteenth Stream Zadar points to the enviable tradition of nurturing contemporary dance expression, especially in Zadar, and through its numerous participants, it has also influenced the development of the dance scene not only in Zadar but also in Croatia and Europe.

This year, from August 16th to 19th, Stream is opening a Kung Fu & Qi Gong workshop led by Andrej Zupančič, which has been attracting an enviable number of participants for two years in a row and has proven to be an excellent choice for an atypical dance, but extremely interesting and useful workshop. Kung Fu originally comes from the Shaolin monastery in China and is one of the oldest martial and spiritual arts. It includes gaining fitness, strength, flexibility, mobility, practicing traditional Shaolin forms (kata) and hand and foot techniques. Mastering the skill requires dedication, patience, energy and time. Qi Gong, also called "meditation in motion", is a practice that nurtures and balances life energy. With Qi Gong, participants take care of the internal balance of energies called "Qi". The exercises consist of coordinated positions, movements and breathing techniques. Qi Gong is used for health and spiritual purposes and in martial arts training.

The next in the series of summer workshops is Poetic Body by Milan Tomášik, a dance artist from Slovenia, and also lasts from August 16 to 19. The presentation of the work of this workshop will open the Monoplay contemporary dance festival. Tomášik has been a guest performer at the Monoplay festival on several occasions, and this is the first time he has presented himself in Zadar as a teacher.

The workshop explores a body that is fully present, alive and engaged. Through contemporary dance, improvisation and composition, the workshop invites you to connect with yourself, space and others and is focused on discovering the body as an instrument capable of expressing rhythm, emotions, tension and the intangible.

In a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, musicality, precision of movement, footwork, jumps and pirouettes will be explored, developing presence, awareness and creativity in performance.

The educational part of the Zadar dance summer will be closed by the third workshop in a row, which brings the popular Flying Low & Passing Through technique led by Nina Fajdiga from Slovenia.

Flying Low develops a strong connection between the body and the floor, explores spirals, speed, gravity and fluid transitions between falling and rising. Every part of the body actively participates in the movement, discovering new possibilities for moving through space. The workshop begins on the 20th and lasts until the 22nd of August. A public presentation of this typically contemporary dance technique will be held on the last day of the Monoplay festival at the opening of the last evening.
