When the legendary traveller, Jason, founded Zadar with his Argonauts, according to a Zadar poet, it just might be that the original ground stone built in its foundation was a sanctuary. On a small space, during a long period, churches have been built one upon the other older, as evidence of continuity of the spiritual life of its citizens.
The past has left its traces at every step, including church architecture. In Zadar, among others, there are churches as follows, the Church of St Donat, the Church and Monastery of St Mary, the Cathedral of St Anastasia, the Church of St Chrysogonus, the Church of St Simeon, the Church and Monastery of St Francis, the Church of Our Lady of Health, the Church of St Andrew and St Peter the Elder, the Church of St Elijah the Prophet, the Church and Monastery of St Michael, the Church of St Dominic, as well as the remains of the Churches of St Nediljica and Stomorica from the Early Middle Ages. Namely, those are the most representative and monumental ecclesiastical buildings, which testify to a truly dynamic and constant spiritual life of the city.
